This garden and property are a 20-year ongoing labor of love, featuring hundreds of perennial shrubs and flowers, all maintained by the owners. Rustic nautical and farm implements frame garden spaces throughout this two-acre property on Block Island. At the entrance, visitors are greeted by pocket gardens of plants native to the Northeast. A large perennial installation along the driveway includes a four-season display of trees, shrubs, and flowers. Behind the home, a walled vegetable garden with raised beds and potted herbs is ringed by the gardeners’ favorite perennials that deer can’t reach! Other interesting areas include a moss-covered “secret path” and a separate composting area. Eighteenth century stone walls surround the property, and stone walkways meander through the gardens. All the plants and trees are carefully selected to withstand Block Island’s unique environment, and must withstand high winds, heavy deer browse and salt spray.
